Bob Mackie: 60+ Years of Iconic Costumes, From Cher to Miley
Bob Mackie has designed costumes and gowns for some of the most legendary names in entertainment history.
Bob Mackie has spent the last 60+ years crafting the visual identity for some of the greatest entertainers who ever lived: Cher, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Whitney Houston, Carol Burnette, Elton John, and many others.
He created the famous curtain dress that Carol Burnett wore in The Carol Burnett Show’s spoof of Gone With the Wind.
He designed the nude dress that Marilyn Monroe infamously wore while singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to JFK.
And he and Cher have been collaborating on costumes since she was 19. He worked with her on The Sonny and Cher Show, multiple tours and music videos, and still designs for her today.
In our interview, you’ll hear him talk about the dress she wore on the cover of Time magazine. She liked the dress so much that she also wore it to the very first Met Gala in 1974 (picture below, walking in with Bob Mackie).
Bob is the subject of the new documentary Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion (now streaming on Prime Video). You can see in the pictures above where the “naked illusion” name comes from.
I got to meet and spend some time with Bob last week in New York City.
He is 85-years-old and sharp as ever.
