I first learned about Jamison Green in 2017 when Jennifer Finney Boylan described his book, Becoming A Visible Man, in The New York Times as "the first great memoir by a trans man".
And she’s right.
I read the book after that and it blew me away.
Jamison is the former president of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (formerly the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association) and has spent his career fighting (quite successfully) to make the healthcare world a safer, more accessible place for trans people.
We talk about his work, the seeming invisibility of trans men, discovering his bisexuality in his 50s, and he gives the best explanation I've ever heard for why people feel threatened by gender nonconformity.
Jamison was born in 1948. We don't get to hear from a lot of trans men in the media and so I was excited to get to talk with him for the LGBTQ+ Elders Project we're doing.
If you enjoy our podcast, please text one friend who you think would also like it. Just one. Things that like really do help our show continue to grow and be able to do things like this elders series.
Thank you, as always, for listening.
See you next week.
Much love,
